DOT V opposes mining operation in Albay tourist spots
The Department of Tourism V has opposed the proposed mining operation to several tourist spots in Albay by the Minecraft Resources Corporation of Sorsogon.
The mining application by Alex Wee Jr. of Minecraft Resources Corporation which before the regional office of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will cover at least eight barangays in the province where several tourist spots are located.
Knowing that Albay during the term of Governor Joey S. Salceda is declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) as Biosphere Zone, it will prohibit the destruction of the environment. It is also strengthened by the resolution declaring Albay a “No-Mining” area.
According to the Department of Tourism (DOT) V, the reason why they opposed the proposed mining operation is that it will affect and destroy tourist spots within the province. It will destroy not just the target zone but the whole picturesque of the spot.
The mining firm is targeting to mine limestone deposits particularly in the town of Camalig but its head, just like DOT, is against with this operation. DOT V officer Philip Bartilet said that DOT and MGB of DENR must work in updating data on eco-tourism to avoid conflicting negotiations.
There are declared spots open for mining so it is normal for mining firms to apply in investing and establishing operation in such place. There are other issues of firms trying to enter eco-tourism zones like in Bulusan, a proposed geothermal operation yet opposed by natives. The project proponent respected the decision ending the attempt. In Labo, Camarines Norte, a mining firm applies for operation in Mt. Labo yet the Provincial Government of Camarines Norte is against with this because the place is a forested area and a watershed where the water comes from. Contamination of water is possible if the project will be approved. DOT strongly trusts that these several attempts to enter and operate within the tourism zone will not be approved especially now that our DENR Secretary is a tough advocate and against mining operation in the country.
